There are many ways to brew: Aeropress Edition

At Cog coffee, we are drawn to the experimental side of coffee, so the AeroPress is a favorite of ours. Beyond the AeroPress’s versatility, we’re huge fans of the AeroPress brewer for several reasons:

  • Portable. Never have to search for good coffee when traveling.

  • Simple. Only need hot water and ground coffee to brew.

  • Fun. Endless approaches to try out.

  • Tidy. Easy to clean

One of our favorite recipes is the winner of the 2021 AeroPress championships, Tuomas Merikanto of Finland. Here is Cog’s demonstration of the recipe:

The AeroPress is a bit weird, but it has layers and delightful quirks. (Kind of relatable, if you ask us.)

For those that aren’t yet relating, the AeroPress is a coffee maker that combines two different brewing methods. There’s an initial phase of the coffee steeping in hot water, akin to a French press. Then, to finish the brewing process, a piston pushes the water out through a paper filter –– similar to espresso or filtered coffee processes.

This hybrid functionality means that there is potential for experimentation, and indeed hundreds of recipes & techniques have been developed over the years. There’s even an annual competition called the World AeroPress Championships, where people from over 50 countries compete to make the best cup of coffee using their favorite AeroPress recipe.
